The Old Cottage

Extension and renovation within a Conservation Area

Set within a Conservation Area, the extension to this cottage takes inspiration from traditional forms but is decidedly modern in it's detailing. Whilst the project is extensive, discreet interventions to the front of the property minimise the visual impact on the Conservation Area from the street.

The scheme was conceived as a collection or collage of moments and experiences that transition from public to semi-private and private as you move through the site.

This concept materialised as a series of single storey elements housing different functions, positioned to respond to site constraints. The experiential journey through these elements is choreographed around a series of moments, views and changes in volume which create different relationships between these functions and the wider site.

The use of and relationship to water features extensively in these moments, a key part of the brief from a fantastic client who is passionate about high quality design.
